FAQ’s

What can I expect in my first session?

Your first session is a chance for us to get to know one another and begin building a foundation of trust. We’ll talk about what brought you to counseling, explore your goals, and discuss what you hope to gain from our work together. You’ll also have space to ask questions, share concerns, and get comfortable with the process. My goal is to help you feel heard, understood, and supported right from the start.

Do you offer in-person and virtual sessions?

Yes, I offer both in-person sessions at my office in downtown Aberdeen, NC and virtual sessions throughout NC via a secure telehealth platform. This flexibility allows you to choose the setting that best fits your needs and comfort level. Many clients appreciate the option of virtual therapy for convenience, while others prefer the connection of meeting face-to-face. Either way, the level of care and attention you receive will always be the same.

Do you take insurance?

Willow Haven Counseling Services accepts select insurance plans, including AETNA, BCBS, and Medicaid. I encourage you to verify your mental health benefits before your first session to understand coverage, copayments, and deductibles. If you prefer, you can also choose to pay privately (self-pay), which can provide more flexibility and confidentiality in your care.

What if I don’t have insurance?

If you don’t have insurance, or prefer not to use it, self-pay options are available. I also offer a sliding scale for clients who may need financial flexibility to make counseling more accessible. Discounts are also available for military connected families.

How long are sessions and how often will we meet?

Most sessions are 50–55 minutes long and are typically scheduled weekly or biweekly, depending on your goals and availability. During our first few sessions, we’ll collaborate on a plan that fits your needs and comfort level. As therapy progresses, some clients choose to meet less frequently while continuing to build on their growth.

Do you integrate faith or spirituality into counseling?

Yes—Christian faith integration is available for clients who desire it. My approach is respectful and collaborative, meaning we’ll only include faith-based perspectives or practices if it aligns with your personal beliefs and comfort. Whether you’re seeking therapy from a Christian perspective or prefer a more clinical approach, my goal is to create a space where your values are honored and incorporated in a way that supports your healing.

Do you work with couples and children?

Yes, I work with couples navigating transitions such as becoming parents, reconnecting in the midst of family life, or building a strong foundation in early marriage. I also work with teen girls (ages 14 and older) who are managing anxiety, self-esteem challenges, or learning how to navigate relationships. I do not provide therapy for individuals who are in active addiction but can connect you with trusted community resources and specialized providers who can offer the support you need.

Does therapy actually work & will there be homework?

Yes—therapy is an evidence-based, collaborative process that can lead to meaningful change. The effectiveness of therapy depends on several factors, including your readiness to engage, the relationship between you and your therapist, and the consistency of your sessions. Many clients notice progress as they gain insight, learn new coping skills, and experience greater emotional balance.

Therapy looks different for everyone. Some sessions may lead to gentle reflections, journaling prompts, or small practice steps to try between meetings. These aren’t graded or mandatory—they’re simply tools to help you apply what we discuss in real life. You’re always in control of how much you take on between sessions, and we’ll work at a pace that feels right for you.
